Fatty Acids: Polyunsaturated with Other than Methylene-interrupted Double Bonds

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Two types of fatty acids are considered here – those with conjugated double bond systems, and those in which the double bonds are separated by two or more methylene groups. Related fatty acids from plant systems may have acetylenic bonds or oxygenated groups, and these will be considered elsewhere. Similarly, the eicosanoids and hydroperoxides, which can also have conjugated double bond systems, are discussed in other documents.

Interaction of vitamin E and its model compounds with unsaturated fatty acids in homogeneous solution.

Either alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) or one of its model compounds having side chains of different length at the 2-position of alpha-tocopherol, forms complexes with an unsaturated fatty acid in methanol. For complex formation, the isoprenoid side chain and hydroxy group of alpha-tocopherol are unessential and, rather, the methyl groups attached to the aromatic ring of the chromanol moiety seems...

Tritioboration and synthesis of tritium-labeled polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Methyl esters of polyunsaturated fatty acids labeled with tritium were prepared by partial stereoselective reduction of the corresponding acetylenic esters with tritiated disiamylborane, followed by protonolysis with tritiated acetic acid. The labeling was strictly specific, and the tritium atoms were located only at the carbon atoms forming the unsaturated bond(s). Synthesis of some tritiated ...

Conjugated Linoleic Acid

Conjugated linoleic acid, better known as CLA, is a fatty acid derived from the required nutrient, linoleic acid. The major structural difference between linoleic acid (an 18 carbon, polyunsaturated fatty acid) and CLA, is that linoleic acid has double bonds at carbons 9 and 12 in a cis configuration (methylene interrupted), while CLA has numerous isomers without methylene interrupted conjugate...

Trans Fatty Acids

What are trans fatty acids (TFA)? Fatty acids found in foods can be saturated (SFA, no double bonds), monounsaturated (MUFA, 1 double bond) or polyunsaturated (PUFA , 2 or more double bonds). The double bonds provide rigidity to the molecule and result in specific molecular configurations. Naturally occurring fatty acids in foods usually have the cis configuration, i.e. the hydrogen atoms with ...

Current Knowledge on Source and Synthesis of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA): A Review

Lipids may be bounded as “fatty acids, their derivatives, and substances connected biosynthetically or functionally to these compounds” [1]. It mainly consists of triacylglycerol (TAG’s), which are molecules composed of three fatty acids and glycerol (phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol also included) [2] and generally found in the tissues of microorganisms, plants, animals and insects [3-6]. T...
